One effective RTI strategy is progress monitoring. This approach helps teachers keep track of how well students are learning after an intervention begins. It involves using short and frequent checks such as reading or math assessments to measure improvement over time. For instance, if a student is receiving reading support, the teacher might listen to the student read for one minute each week and record the number of correct words. The results are placed on a simple graph so that both the teacher and student can see if growth is happening. When the progress line stays flat, it is a signal that something needs to change. The teacher may increase the time spent on instruction or introduce a different strategy to meet the student’s needs.

Progress monitoring gives teachers real information about how well an intervention is working before a learning problem becomes more serious. It allows instruction to be adjusted early so students stay on track and continue to grow. This practice has been shown to improve learning outcomes and reduce the number of students who need intensive Tier III support because teachers can make timely instructional decisions based on data instead of assumptions (Skaar et al., 2022).
