respond to discussion 2MR

Nathan

I received a score of 24 on this test, and I think that the results of the test fit my leadership style perfectly. The test said that I lean towards a more democratic or participative style of leadership and that is truly what I do with my team. While I am still the one that makes the final decisions, on most things, I want to have all of my team members actively engaged and feel as if they have a say in how things are done.

Being in the Army, having command and control is very important but ensuring that the people who work for you feel included and apart of the team is also very important. If one person feels like their opinion does not matter then they may have trouble speaking up in times when their input would be invaluable. I do think that the fact that the test said I might struggle with how people respond to consultation is accurate as well as counseling is one of my least favorite parts of the jobs, but it is something that I am still continuing to work on.

The results of my leadership style reveal that I follow a democratic or participative style of leadership, which I can pinpoint from my experiences. As per the results, this is a style whereby expectations are set up clearly while seeking out team input and collaboration. Looking back on my time in the in the Army, my success came from building trust and collaborating with my teams. By involving others in the decision-making process, I instilled mutual respect and willingness to include others’ different views, which resulted in the ability to work harder and created better results. The tests results also accurately revealed that my leadership style tends to struggle in high pressure situations. For instance, I was required to make swift, unilateral decisions whether I liked it or not, which is something I struggled as a participative leader.
Although I resonate most with the democratic leadership, I think I am also a situational leader to some extent. Depending on the situation, I can adapt to a more direct or hands off approach. For example, in crisis, I prefer a dominating leadership style to make decisions faster. On the other hand, when the environment is relatively more conducive, I excel in encouraging people to work together. In general, I consider the test results useful, since they point out my strengths that I consider important in leadership, for example, building trust and involving others and reveal my weaknesses, including rapid decision making.
