The styles that I believe would be most effective in the criminal justice system as a whole are autocratic style or transformational style. Transformational leadership is when the leader tries to make a personal connection with employees to attempt to increase motivation to ensure goals are met. These types of leaders look to motivate employees instead of using a punitive force. And autocratic style, also known as authoritarian or authoritative style, is a leader using a punitive force to ensure things get done. These types of leaders utilizing this style do not take suggestions from employees and control all decisions based on their personal opinions and ideas. Personally, if I were an administrator in today’s criminal justice system I would choose to utilize the transformation leadership style because I believe it is the more effective option.

Transformational leaders encourage staff to take ownership of their roles. Which leads to empowerment and to increased job satisfaction! Also professional commitment is what many employees report and feeling valued and recognized for their contributions. Transformational leaders also foster environments that promote open communication, building strong relationships, and encouraging teamwork. All of these things can help break down the barriers between different agencies in the criminal justice system and promote a more unified approach through better communication. The criminal justice system is no stranger to criticism and transformational leaders can model resilience to their employees by focusing on positive outcomes, even during times of scrutiny and harsh criticism. A transformational leader creates a culture that embraces change in the workplace rather then discourages it. And encouraging employees to think creatively and voice ideas on new solutions to improve on current policies. This type of leadership emphasizes the importance of community involvement and community relations. Transformational leaders are invested in the growth and development of their employees as well. In the criminal justice system, this looks like investing in training and through programs that prepare them to become future leaders. This also ensures sustainability for the agency or company and promotes longevity.

The transformational style of leadership does have its own unique advantages and disadvantages, however. The high levels of enthusiasm employees may feel expected to produce can lead to burnout, especially if the expectations are unrealistic. A common downside to the transformational style of leadership is that they may prioritize innovation and growth over the mundane day-to-day management tasks, potentially leading to disorganization and confusion. And a potential issue that any type of leadership style may face is that their employees may not respond to the transformational style (Giacomazzi, Peak. 2018). Everyone is different and some employees say they prefer a more structured leadership style at their job. Further, failing to accommodate different preferences can lead to disengagement by employees because they do not feel heard or seen. However, an advantage of this style of leadership is that it promotes a sense of connection through personal relationships and connections between employees and leaders. This can increase effective communication and collaboration because employees are more likely to work together. Another potential advantage within this leadership style, though, is that staff can become overly reliant on leaders. And when the leader makes a mistake or leaves the position, it could lead to less productivity and results.
