Overview

In this assignment, you’ll research and design a safe, developmentally appropriate classroom for children aged from birth to five years of age. You’ll need to follow the instructions provided in this graded project. You’ll also need to use the resources available for this graded project. Your task is to select an age range, research the guidelines for classroom arrangement, choose developmentally appropriate centers and toys, and then create a classroom design. You’ll explain your choices in a detailed essay.

You’ll provide the requested information and answer the required questions in one continuous essay of at least eight fully developed paragraphs. Each paragraph will likely be at least four to six fully developed sentences.

Instructions

Begin by researching appropriate guidelines for designing an early education classroom and selecting developmentally appropriate toys and materials. You can find this information through online sources and early childhood education publications.

Summarize and explain at least five guidelines regarding room arrangement, focusing on safety and developmental appropriateness. Additionally, explain the logic behind placing certain centers next to each other and why other centers need to be positioned in specific areas of the room. Include a discussion of five guidelines for choosing developmentally appropriate centers and toys.

Avoid repeating researched information. Demonstrate your understanding by applying the guidelines to design an effective early education classroom. Provide a diagram of your classroom layout to support your essay. The diagram should clearly display how centers are arranged, adhering to the guidelines discussed in your essay.

Designing a Classroom for a Specific Age Group

1. Select an age group: Choose one of the following age groups for which you’ll design a classroom.

1. Zero to 12 months – This is the age group I choose!

2. 13 to 24 months

3. 25 to 36 months

4. Three to five years

2. Introductory paragraph. Write an introductory paragraph identifying the selected age group and the centers to be included in the classroom. Ensure that the centers chosen are developmentally appropriate for the age group.

3. Description of centers. Choose at least five developmentally appropriate centers. In two fully developed paragraphs, provide the following details for each center:

1. The center’s full name and an explanation of its importance in the classroom

2. A detailed description of the toys and materials in the center, including their purpose and why they’re developmentally appropriate

3. An explanation of why the center was placed in its chosen location within the classroom

4. Answer these questions. Write a fully developed paragraph to answer each question. Each question should have its own paragraph, so you should have four paragraphs.

1. Why are the center and materials developmentally appropriate and educational for this age group? What are the learning objectives in this center?

2. Why would this center appeal to children in this age group?

3. What’s the educational value of the center, and how does it support the children’s development?

4. How does the classroom arrangement ensure safety for young children? Identify any potential hazards and explain how they can be prevented.

5. Conclusion paragraph. Summarize at least five guidelines regarding room arrangement, focusing on safety and developmental appropriateness, and discuss five guidelines for choosing developmentally appropriate centers and toys. This paragraph will also consist of four to six fully developed sentences.

By following these instructions, you’ll create a well-thought-out classroom design that promotes learning, development, and safety for the selected age group. Ensure that your essay is written clearly, following all guidelines, and includes thoughtful reasoning behind your choices.

Writing Guidelines

1. Type your submission, double-spaced, in a standard print font and size. Calibri 11, Arial 11, and Times New Roman 12 are all recommended fonts and sizes. Use a standard document format with one-inch margins.

2. Include a title page in APA format that includes your full name, the name and number of this assignment, the name and number of this course, the name of the school, and the date of submission. Refer to the Sample APA Paper for ECE Students on the Early Childhood Learning Resource Center.

3. Be sure to cite all sources used to support your writing using in-text citations in the body of your essay and a references page at the end; use APA format for both.

4. Review the grading rubric that follows this section to ensure all portions of the assignment are satisfied.
