Problem
There are knowledge gaps between heart disease and depression risk factors.
Cardiovascular patients may have depressive symptoms that develop, due to chronicity of
their illness, lack of physical activity, increased stress levels, or pre-existing mental health
conditions. Cardiovascular individuals are screened for depressive symptoms utilizing
validated screeners: and may underreport such symptoms due to embarrassment or
stigma. Research shows that alternative medicine interventions such as tai chi may
improve and reduce cardiovascular risks in patients with depression (Conboy et al, 2020).
Translating Knowledge into Action
The translational model that would be utilized would be RE-AIM. This is a translational
model that utilizes five easy steps to improve the delivery of public health improvements,
through evaluation of interventions in individuals, clinics, or organizations (Glasgow et al,
1999: Dang et al, 1999):
• Reach the intended target population: cardiac patients (inpatient/outpatient)
settings.
• EOicacy- Assessment of the populations’ ability to achieve a desired goal
• Adoption of an intervention by staO, patients, and families
• Implementation of new interventions with consistency
• Maintenance of sustained interventions with annotated eOects over time.
Common Barriers to Evidence Translation
Barriers to evidence translation are related to stigma related to mental health conditions,
depressive symptom underreporting, lack of trust in professional providers, barriers to
medical access, or preference to cope with problems without help (Jin-Kyung, et al, 2023).
DNP-prepared nurses through evidence-based research can develop interventions that
improve initial screenings for cardiovascular patients, utilize alternative medicine
interventions such as tai chi, acupuncture to reduce depressive symptoms to enhance
cardiac health, thus improving quality of life.
