Assessment 01 – Locating Credible Databases and Research
Create a 2-4 page resource that will describe databases that are relevant to EBP around one of
the diagnoses below and could be used to help a new hire nurse better engage in EBP.
Before you complete the instructions detailed in the courseroom, first select one of the
diagnoses below. You will use this diagnosis in Assessments #2 and #3.
• Gastroenteritis: An inflammation of the stomach and intestines, primarily caused by
viruses or bacteria.
o Interventions: Rehydration, antiemetics, antidiarrheals, and dietary
modifications.
o Keywords: Stomach flu, viral gastroenteritis, bacterial gastroenteritis,
dehydration, electrolyte imbalance.
• Urinary Retention: A temporary inability to empty the bladder may occur after surgery,
often caused by the anesthetic.
o Interventions: Bladder scanning, catheterization, medications to relax the
bladder, and monitoring for signs of infection.
o Keywords: Benign prostatic hyperplasia, neurogenic bladder, postoperative
retention, overflow incontinence, bladder distension.
• Sepsis: A potentially life-threatening condition caused by the body’s response to an
infection.
o Interventions: Broad-spectrum antibiotics, fluid resuscitation, vasopressors, and
monitoring of vital signs.
o Keywords: Septic shock, systemic inflammatory response syndrome,
bacteremia, organ dysfunction, lactate levels.
