Module 1 – SLP

Database Structures, Languages, and Architectures

The purpose of the Session Long Project in Trident University classes is to give you the opportunity to explore the applicability of each Module to your own life, work, and place in space and time, and to experiment with the Module to see how the otherwise academically rigorous presentation of a topic may, with more or less work and/or trauma, become “up close and personal.” This is done in a number of different ways—sometimes cumulative papers, sometimes practical hands-on experimentation with a tool of some sort, sometimes reflections on a place of work or life. The common thread is personal application, aimed at demonstrating a cumulative knowledge and understanding of the course’s material.

In this course, the project assignments for each module involve learning about various types of database storage. In each module, your SLP assignment will consist of completing an analysis of the database systems presented.

Option 1: Study the following:

Power BI Data Modeling with DAX

 from LinkedIn Learning

Introduction to Dax

DAX is a very powerful tool in Excel and PowerBI that enables the analysis of very large datasets. PowerBI provides the tools to produce visualizations for the analytics on the Big Data using DAX.

Review the tutorials above, and then prepare a 2- to 3-page review of the tutorials, covering the following topics:

·
a comprehensive review of what the tutorials teach; choose at least two key concepts to discuss in technical detail

·
a thorough discussion of what you learned specifically from the tutorial

·
(optional, not graded but appreciated, and of benefit to you as well by studying from different sources) If you can find one or two other similar video tutorial(s) or reading material(s) on this topic, please study them and give a simple review (one or two paragraphs). Please also reference them in your reference list.

Option 2: Discuss a database system used in a company or an organization (your organization, or any other organization). Your paper should cover the following topics:

·
Why it is necessary to use the database system?

·
What kinds of information does the database system collect? And what information does it provide?

·
Which database management systems are used? Access? Oracle? Relational, Hadoop, Data Warehouse, Data Lake? Why was the database management system a good (or not good) match for the company?

·
Discuss other areas related to this database system such as cost, backups, and security.

Your paper should be 2 to 3 pages in length, and reflect your personal experience with this issue. The important part of all these project assignments is to carefully assess your own experience with the topic, and then reflect critically on what you learned about situations through this assessment process.

SLP Assignment Expectations

Length: Follow the number of pages required in the assignment excluding cover page and references. Each page should have about 300 words.

Your assignment will be graded according to the MSITM SLP Grading Rubric.

You are required to make effective and appropriate use of in-text citations to the assigned readings and other source material to support your arguments. Please use the Trident
