Gukurahundi translates to “the early rain which washes away the chaff before the spring rains”, which derives from a Shona- language in Zimbabwe. The two most severe episodes of mass atrocities were the so-called Gukurahundi massacres from 1983 to 1987, during which government forces killed about 20,000 people in predominantly ethnic Ndebele areas, and Operation Murambatsvina (“Restore Order”) in 2005, which resulted in the forced displacement of more than 700,000 people (United States Holocaust Museum n.d.).

Between 1982 and 1987, Zimbabwe’s Fifth Brigade that had been trained by North Korea committed great atrocities to the people to find armed dissidents. Former President Robert Mugabe had intentions of finding those who opposed him and his policy. During which many of the people were starved, while thousands of people were tortured and displaced. Much of which led to the targeting of people in the southwest provinces such as Ndebele and Kalanga.  In November 2017 Former Zimbabwe President Mugabe was taken and overthrown by a coup to then be impeached ending his 40 years of his rule.

The potential long-term consequences of oppression for these groups could lead to greater repercussions that affect all of the population and not just that country and area, but to genocide. The erasure of a people that have been over policed in the most horrific way. Seeing as any time the population is reduced by such great numbers, it effects the world and society around us.
