ssignment Learning Objectives:

• Demonstrate adequate reading and comprehension skills successfully, regarding the assigned

text.

• Identify and articulate key ideas from the assigned text with reasonable clarity and accuracy, i.e.,

the history and development of the Christian Church from the Protestant Reformation.

• Articulate the relationship of the Catholic Church with other Christian denominations and

movements, including Protestantism, Evangelicalism, and Pentecostalism.

• Demonstrate intelligent and accurate critical assessment of the text.

• Reflect thoughtfully and with depth on the text, its meaning for the student, and its implications

for teaching.

Assignment:

• In keeping with the overall policy for this course, any use of AI will be considered a violation of

Academic Integrity and dealt with accordingly.

• Read Chapter 6, “Protestantism, Evangelicalism, Pentecostalism: Changing Contours of

Christianity in the Modern Era,” Michael J. McClymond, pp. 155-185 in its entirety.

• Write a summary and examination of the Chapter in no more than 4 written pages (1000-1200

words).

• The objective of the assignment is for you to provide an overall summary of some key points

within the chapter. Do not use external resources.

• Avoid simply providing a list of names, dates, and occurrences articulated by the author. Rather,

identify significant key events and persons within the context of the Christian movements of the

Reformation era and their importance historically, based upon the assigned reading. Articulate why

these particular key facts are significant.

• In your assignment, include:

• An introductory paragraph in which you articulate the overarching theme of the chapter

and the key points you will be making in your summary.

• Your overall summary and examination of the chapter.

One or two concluding paragraphs in which you reflect on what you have learned from

the reading and how the information might impact, affect, or influence your thought and

teaching.

• Type your assignment in 12-point font, double-spaced, and with standard margins.

• Include a word count and page numbers.

• Provide a cover page. Feel free to be creative with your cover page but ensure that all relevant

information (i.e., your name, the date, the course number/title, the assignment number, the chapter

title and author, the instructor’s name, the word count) is included and you meet the requirements

of academic integrity. The cover page is not included in your word/page count.

• Include a bibliographical reference to the chapter at the end of your assignment (i.e., a reference

page/bibliography) and references to specific pages of the reading in the body of your paper, using

Chicago Style Format. The bibliography is not included in your word/page count.

• Submit your assignment as a Word Document on Canvas.

• Format your file name as such: YOURLASTNAMECourseNumberDate (e.g.,

FAWCETT250SJanuary1). I will mark your assignments using the “Track Changes” feature in

Word and return them to you via Canvas.

Assignment Marking Criteria:

• Demonstrate in your writing:

o Scholarly integrity and fair representation of your source (i.e., reference the assigned text

appropriately in the body of your paper and in your bibliography/reference page, according to

Chicago Style Format).

o Organization, clarity, and readability.

o Correct grammar and inclusive language, including sentence structure, spelling, vocabulary, and

punctuation.

• Your assignment will be marked based on the following two sets of criteria: Content and

Reflection and Writing Skill. Each set of criteria will receive a comment based upon how well

the criteria are met. The comments (and their rough percentage ranges) are: Excellent (86-100);

Very Good (74-85); Good (66-73); Satisfactory (58-65); Poor (50-57); Unsatisfactory (0-49).

The final percentage mark is a qualitative assessment of your work based on both sets of criteria.

I will also provide comments and feedback throughout your paper.

o Content and Reflection: Demonstrate comprehension of the chapter; demonstrate thoughtful

analysis and understanding of the material; present discussion accurately, fairly, and with scholarly

integrity (i.e., balanced presentation); exhibit depth of thought (i.e., insight, understanding,

judgement); present a reflection on the chapter’s personal and theological/spiritual impact on you

and your teaching; well organized discussion. NOTE: Regarding your reflection, use “I”

statements.

o Writing Skill: Clear, well structured, flows, interesting, consistent style; correct spelling,

grammar, punctuation, and vocabulary; inclusive language; consistent and accurate use of Chicago

Style Format, bibliography/reference page, and referencing; appropriate length.
