The authors of the New Testament show us that Jesus has fulfilled the promises and covenants of the Old Testament. Jesus Himself said that this is what He came to do (Matthew 5:17). The writer of Hebrews contrasts the New and Old Covenant to show that the New Covenant is superior to the Old Covenant. The author argues that Jesus is superior in every way to the Old Covenant, which is passing away, and that salvation can therefore only be found in Him.

This week, you will discuss how Jesus fulfilled the promises and covenants of the Old Testament and why the New Covenant is superior to the Old Covenant.

For your initial post, complete the following:

  • Identify at least three Old Testament events, people, or ideas that the author of Hebrews says Jesus has fulfilled or is superior to.
  • How does the author of Hebrews argue that Jesus is superior to the things you have chosen? Show where the author of Hebrews is right using the four gospels. Provide specific examples.

Discuss with your classmates:

  • What does it mean to you that Jesus is superior?
  • How has the author’s argument of Hebrews impacted your view of Jesus and the Old Testament?
