HISTORY OF FILM: THE CLASSIC ERA

Film Studies 2210/Fall 2024

Critical Thematic Essay

Assignment:

Write an 4-6 pp. critical essay. Over first half or so of the semester, you will work with your
discussion leader to focus on a narrowed subject relevant to one of the films screened (in whole or in
part) in class. You will identify a theme. You must submit your proposal of said theme by November 7 .
Your preparation to write must include the reading of a book relevant to your topic, and you will give a 3-
5 minute presentation about that book in your discussion section. You must make a detailed thematic
analysis of severely narrowed scope (see “Requirements, point 1, below). Taken together, the three parts
of this assignment (book report, proposal, and finished essay) is 45% of the course grade.

Requirements:

Develop a thesis; that is, take a position on a narrowed topic relevant to your theme (for example, the
theme “expressionist lighting in a scene in KISS ME DEADLY”).
Support that position with specific, detailed evidence.
Submit (on paper; on Canvas only in a pinch) your proposal of theme by November 7 (preferably
much earlier).
Give a 3-5 minute report in your discussion section on a book relevant to your theme (for example, a
biography).
Submit (on Canvas) the final draft of your essay by December 5 (preferably much earlier).

Criteria for grading:

Focus of the theme;
Strength and clarity of the thesis;
Organization and power of the argument supporting the thesis;
Use of specific, detailed examples in support of the thesis;
Grammar, spelling, neatness, and readability;
Style: economical use of language, appropriate and consistent tone.
