Theory Presentation

The primary purpose of this assignment is to comprehensively analyze and apply a nursing theory that would be appropriate to a DNP project. To do this, you are tasked to prepare an audio-visual presentation that focuses on one of the theories, presenting evidence backed by peer-reviewed journal articles and accredited resources. This presentation is based in Primary care setting of APRN (Nurse practitioner).

Considerations for the DNP Project

An important consideration for the theory application presentation is its connection to the DNP project. Students are meant to demonstrate a synthesis of knowledge and the ability to translate evidence into practice. Your DNP project is meant to be:

1. Relevant to advanced practice nursing

2. Characterized by a systematic process

3. Targeted to a population of interest, addressing the contextual aspect of the population’s setting

4. Conceived with measurable outcomes and with a dissemination component

For the theory application presentation, you must choose a theory that would be valid for a DNP project. One main way to start to think about your approach to the DNP project (and thus, the approach to the theory application presentation) is to decide whether you want to use an evidence-based practice (EBP) or a quality improvement model as the basis for your project.

Focus on the DNP Project

You are encouraged to use this assignment as a chance to either begin research and work for your future DNP project or continue your efforts on an ongoing DNP project. For examples of DNP projects, see the
doctoral project repository at the Doctors of Nursing Practice websiteLinks to an external site.

Evidence-based practice involves the integration of best evidence, patient preferences, and clinical expertise as a guide for clinical decision-making.

Examples: Creating and implementing new protocols, implementing clinical practice guidelines

Quality improvement involves improving patient care through identifying patient care problems and implementing a plan for improvement.

Examples: Implementing a new screening tool in the clinic, improving documentation of critical lab values

Take the information from assignments 4.1 and 6.1 and develop a presentation. Using the information from these assignments, develop a presentation that covers the following information:

1. Phenomenon of Interest and Patient population.

2. Theory that will be used to guide your project (find the original work of the theorist if possible:

a. What type of theory is it (descriptive, explanatory, or predictive)?

b. Why will it be compatible with the chosen practice setting?

3. Literature review related to the chosen theory. Find at least 3 recent articles (2018–2023) that demonstrate the use of this theory in either the patient population you are focusing on or the problem you are trying to improve.

4. Complete an evaluation of success of these articles and determine:

a. Was the theory used successfully in the study?

b. Can you reproduce this study in population of interest?

5. DNP Project Planning:

a. Patient Population and Identified Problem?

b. Planned intervention?

c. What framework will you use to guide your project?

d. What is the overarching goal of the project?

6. Review the rubric for further details.

7. Example: You can choose any, an idea of a model would be Pender’s Health Promotion tailored to primary care and the goal would ve to focus on the encouraging adherence to physical activities among obese adults to reduce cardiovascular risk. Population aged 30-60 in primary care setting, mainly those with obesity and at risk of cardiovascular diseases.
