Turn in TWO topic ideas for your Cultural Research Presentation in this folder.  Word your topic ideas in the form of SPECIFIC PURPOSE statements (“My specific purpose is to inform the audience about . . . “) .  Both statements need to focus on different cultural groups.  Both topic ideas need to address a DIFFERENT focus involving DIFFERENT cultural groups (i.e. don’t turn in two topic ideas that involve the same cultural group).

Before turning in topic ideas, make sure you have read this section on Topic Ideas, Download Topic Ideas,and look into your topic ideas to verify that you would be able to find research.  Make sure to watch the lecture about topics for this presentation, and see the Module instructions and topic ideas.

Make sure to read my feedback regarding your statements so you know what to do for your topic.

NOTE: Regarding your cultural group, you will need to be more specific than “Latino” or “Asian”.  Avoid broad categories of cultural groups and be as specific as possible.

ALSO: This assignment is NOT a continuation of our Pop Culture focus.  So please do not present topic ideas about “Stereotypes” or “Portrayals” of a certain culture.  Those types of topics will not be accepted.

(Topic Ideas for Cultural Research Presentation)

For your presentation topic, you will focus on ONE specific cultural/communication aspect of ONE specific Cultural Group.  Regarding the cultural group, you need to be as specific as possible.  The following list are ideas of the kinds of specific cultural groups to focus on.   You can pick from this list.  You can also choose another cultural group to focus on not on the list – but you must let me know what your choice is.

The goal of this presentation is to find out about a specific aspect of a cultural groups that you do not currently know about.  With topics, branch out, be curious, and be creative.  But DO NOT CHOOSE A CULTURAL GROUP WITH WHICH YOU ALREADY IDENTIFY.

Examples of Specific “Cultural Groups” ( YOU CAN CHOOSE FROM THIS )

Hindu (Indian); Buddhist; Palestinian; Greek; Deaf Culture; Jewish; Syrian; Somali; Korean (especially Korean Presbyterian); Mennonite; Colombian; Native American (especially a particular tribe); Vietnamese; Pakistani.  These are only a few examples – you do NOT have to pick from the list.

Ideas for Your Cultural/Communication Focus

For your cultural focus, I suggest searching through the textbook for various good communication aspects of culture that you can focus on.  Idea of a cultural focus can include aspects of health care or notions of medicine, education, dining or food culture, notions of power and status, parenting or family aspect, notions involving religion, holidays, Gender issues and influences.   Some specific topic ideas from your textbook include;

Code Switching, Language Policies, Nonverbal codes (nonverbal interactions with police, for example), Cultural Space, Migrant-Host Relationships, Cultural Adaptation,  Folk Cultures,  Notions of Friendship, Work Relationships, Dating/Marriage, relationships, Conflict Styles, Pacifism

These are just some ideas and terms taken from the textbook.  DO NOT just pick out one of the topics from the list without understanding what it means.  DO SOME RESEARCH and investigation into the topic to see if it would work or if you would want to address it for your speech.

For topics DO NOT pick anything regarding “Stereotypes” or “portrayals” of a Cultural Group.  I want to learn more about specific real aspects of these Cultural Groups; for this assignment, I do NOT want to hear about “misperceptions” of the Cultural Groups.

PROVIDE DETAILED INFORMATION  FOR THIS ASSIGNMENT DO NOT PUT VAUGE INFORMATION.  WHEN PICKING TWO TOPICS SHOW THAT YOU HAVE COMPLETE UNDERSTANDING FOR THESE TOPICS
