Assignment Instructions:
Using
APA 7th edition formatting, write a paper that addresses the following questions in
essay format (not numbered responses). Your paper should integrate key concepts from the course, demonstrate self-reflection, and include at least one scholarly source in addition to the videos.
Content Guidelines – Please Address the Following in Your Essay:
1. If you were a
guard, what type would you have become? How confident are you in that assessment?
2. Why didn’t the “good guards” intervene against the actions of the more aggressive guards?
3. If you were a
prisoner, how do you think you would have responded to the experience? What might you have done differently? Would you be able to endure a real prison sentence of 5 years or more?
4. Why did the prisoners attempt to work
within the prison system (e.g., setting up a Grievance Committee) instead of seeking help from outside or rejecting the system entirely?
5. What is
identity? Do you believe there is a “core self” that exists regardless of how others treat or label you? How easily can a person’s identity be altered?
6. Do you think
working-class youth from an urban background would have responded the same way as the middle-class college students? How might
women have reacted differently in the same study?
7. What do you imagine the
participants felt afterward, when they returned to civilian life and saw the basement laboratory restored to a regular hallway?
8. Was this study
ethical? Was it justifiable to trade participant suffering for the knowledge gained?
9. If you were the lead researcher, would you have
conducted this study? Would you have terminated it sooner? Would you have followed up with additional research?
10. Finally, how has learning about this study
impacted you personally and professionally? What ethical lessons will you carry into your work in human services?
