What is critical race theory?

Critical Race Theory (CRT) is the academic theory of how that racism is rooted and upheld within various institutions of our society. This is done through legislation and the system utilized by the public. At its core, CRT challenges the notion that laws and systems are neutral or objective. This theory emerged in the 1970s as a blanket term to describe racial studies. Supporters argue that lived experiences provide valuable insights into systemic racism’s effects on individuals’ lives. Despite its contributions to discussions about race and justice in America, CRT has faced significant criticism from various parties. Opponents argue that it promotes division by categorizing people solely based on their racial identities rather than emphasizing commonalities among individuals, as if this is not already taking place. What people are failing to realize is that “CRT focuses on examining institutional and legislative structures, not individuals.” ( Reed et al, 2022)

How might critical race theory explain the reasons for inequalities in education or income?

One of the fundamental points of CRT is the concept of institutional racism, which refers to policies and practices within systems that disadvantage students based on their race. For instance, schools in predominantly minority neighborhoods often receive less funding than those in predominantly white areas due to historical patterns of segregation and systemic disinvestment. CRT also emphasizes the biases of educators and authority figures. An example of this is the common discrepancies between disciplinary actions between black and white students. Often leading to more suspensions and severe repercussions for black students. “Institutional racism refers to the policies and practices within and across institutions that, intentionally or not, produce outcomes that chronically favor, or put a racial group at a disadvantage” ( Aspen Institute, 2017)
