Instructions

This is a comparative essay assignment that draws on the development of labour in the global rubber and cotton industries, and it requires you to do two things:

Create a table—found in the first section of Unit 3 of the Study Guide—that charts the development of labour in the global rubber industry, including different divisions of labour, forms of control of labour, causes of discontent, and types of workers’ collective power.
Using the theoretical concepts from the table you created for Unit 2 (cotton) and the table you created for Unit 3 (rubber), John Tully’s book The Devil’s Milk, and the Unit 2 and 3 Study Guide commentary, write an essay that highlights any parallels and differences between cotton and rubber labour. Your essay should walk through the theoretical concepts one time period at a time.
