Cultural Phenomena in Transcultural Care

Cultural phenomena are often observable, recurrent patterns that arise within and characterize a particular cultural population. These occurrences impact the convictions that form the identity of a certain population and encompass a wide range of aspects, from communication methods to distinctive social frameworks (Giger & Haddad, 2021). While there are many differences among cultural groups worldwide, there are also fundamental cultural phenomena that are common to all of them, like communication.

It is essential to comprehend the communication styles of other cultures. This entails picking up on subtleties in language acquisition, tone of voice, and expressions, in addition to verbal and nonverbal cues (Giger & Haddad, 2021). It encompasses speech, facial expressions, gestures, and personal space. Furthermore, nurses need to be ready to engage translators or translation services as necessary because language difficulties might hinder communication. To build a strong rapport with patients, nurses who understand culture embrace a variety of communication modalities. Therefore, it is essential to know how a patient communicates in order to deliver quality care.

Space is yet another cultural phenomenon. Diverse cultural perspectives exist on sovereignty and individual space (Giger & Haddad, 2021). While certain societies favor intimacy, others appreciate greater space. Registered nurses can treat individuals with more respect if they are aware of how comfortable they are in their area. As a result, a culturally competent nurse recognizes and appreciates these distinctions and is aware that people from various cultural backgrounds may feel differently about their level of comfort in terms of close proximity and individual space throughout encounters. An atmosphere of care that is more inclusive benefits from acknowledging and appreciating these distinctions.

Another phenomenon that describes how people structure themselves in society as a whole, especially societal structures of authority, is social organization. Family patterns and hierarchy vary among civilizations. Certain cultures involve individuals of the wider family in communal decision-making processes (Pujanes-Mantor & Buga, 2023). Others may be more customized. Numerous societies place a strong emphasis on the views and values of society as a whole, even outside of the family. Consequently, healthcare professionals can better comprehend individuals’ support networks and responsibilities within their families and communities by having a thorough awareness of their social organization.

Another phenomenon that is present in all cultural groups is time. Although certain societies are more focused on what is currently happening, others are more focused on the prospects for the future (Giger & Haddad, 2021). Diverse temporal orientations are seen across various civilizations. Some societies value preparedness and completing tasks on time above all else because of their forward-thinking outlook. A culturally sensitive caregiver considers these variations and modifies schedules and communications to accommodate patients’ cultural viewpoints on time.

Another phenomenon that is present in all cultural groups is environmental control. The origins of illness and good health are believed to vary among civilizations (Giger & Haddad, 2021). These cover beliefs about nature, hygiene, and the degree to which people believe they influence their physical well-being. Care plans must consider these contextual aspects in order to be culturally competent. Consequently, nurses may give care that aligns with patients’ desires and principles by knowing how they perceive time.

Furthermore, it is important to acknowledge that biological variations in illness and therapy vary throughout societies. For instance, while certain cultural groups may prefer modern medicine, conventional ways of healing may be preferred by others. Cultural awareness in the nursing profession is the ability to recognize genetic, physiological, and biological disparities and to provide individualized care that acknowledges and considers these distinctions (Pujanes-Mantor & Buga, 2023). Registered nurses may consequently provide treatment that is consistent with individuals’ morals and convictions by getting to know their convictions about how to handle the environment.

Understanding these six cultural phenomena is crucial when offering nursing care to individuals from varied cultural backgrounds since they have a significant impact on health views, actions, and results. Registered nurses can deliver care that is both competent and sensitive to the individual requirements of every individual by comprehending and appreciating these cultural phenomena.
