Blog: Looking Back to Looking Forward.

As I pause and reflect on my eleven weeks in
Theoretical and Scientific Foundations of Nursing (NURS- 8114) course, my experience has been challenging, rewarding and has transformed my growth as an upcoming DNP-Prepared nurse. I have gained valuable understanding of examining intuitive skills, nursing models and research approaches essential for developing nursing theories. The knowledge gained in NURS- 8114 course will guide my nursing practice and help me tackle unanswered clinical questions. On a personal level, I have learned to pause, be still and take one day at a time. The growth of the mindset I have adapted to during my course has helped me to become creative, intentional and adaptable to my daily routines.
Theoretical anand Scientific Foundations of Nursing course has prepared me and laid a firm foundation towards becoming a DNP-prepared nurse and an agent of positive social change.

Challenges and Overcoming Them.

One challenge that I struggled with at the beginning of NURS- 8114 course was a lack of clear understanding of theoretical research and integration of nursing theories. The levels of theoretical and scientific knowledge were new concepts which made me feel vulnerable. For example, in the evidence synthesis and appraisal process, I struggled with assessing the quality and validity of research evidence. However, this course covered the basic and core values of philosophy of nursing science and new research approaches that helped me cultivate critical appraisal skills, evaluate systematic reviews and identify common pitfalls in research studies. Additionally, participating and interacting with my colleagues in the course discussions, blogs and assignments increased my understanding and knowledge of relevant theories and provided me with practice of applying them in context.

An Area of Improvement with Strategies.

Identifying an improvement area will enable me to create a plan and become a more efficient team player. Staying motivated and driven in a world full of distractions can be very challenging. Building persistence is one area of improvement that I need to work on. Staying positive and focused when dealing with obstacles, for example during research will be a gain for my for my personal and professional development. My first plan to building my persistence include setting clear, specific and realistic goals by developing daily consistency habits. For example, breaking my big goals into small achievable ones will help me stay on track and maintain momentum. Additionally, building resilience through emotional regulation, mindfulness and having a flexible mindset will help develop self-awareness and manage stressful situations effectively. Lastly seeking support through family, friends, mentors and community will connect me with people who share my values and aspirations, inspire and motivate me to pursue my journey.

New Learned Experience for Future Use.

One key takeaway from this course that will be useful to me as a future DNP-prepared nurse is the implementation gap and strategies to bridge it. Bridging the gap between knowledge creation and its implementation requires adaptation of strategic and proactive approaches. For example, fostering a knowledge-sharing culture across teams will ensure implemented interventions are relevant and feasible for better outcomes. Additionally, tailoring interventions that fit context and targeted populations while using identified frameworks will guide and enhance the implementation process and help in identifying barriers and facilitators of implementation.

Stakeholders’ education is another strategy that provides continuous training and education through in-person training, online modules, workshops and mentoring programs. For example, implementation of a new Electronic Medication Administration Record (EMAR) will require a comprehensive andcontinuous staff training to ensure a smooth transition and adoption. Additionally, establishing a mechanism for staff evaluation and feedback will assist in identification of glitches in the implemented practice allowing timely and safe interventions to occur.

Future Implementation of Learned Experience as a DNP-prepared Nurse.

The knowledge I have gained throughout this course will help me address gaps in nursing practice while utilizing evidence-based practices to create new knowledge. The new knowledge will benefit my patients, organization and community in improving patient quality of care and organizational quality improvement initiatives. As a DNP-prepared nurse and leader, I will facilitate implementation of the best practices by creating education materials for staff and patients. I wish to collaborate with multidisciplinary team members to implement and monitor sustainability of the implemented practices for better outcomes.

As I look back to my accomplishments and forward towards my goals, I wish to focus on my good experiences on this course knowing that I am one step closer to achieving my goal of becoming a DNP-prepared nurse.
