Write 3 paragraph Look at Implicit Bias and Cultural Humility. As you start to get into your book (my grandmother’s hands by resmaa menakem),(chapter 1-4 only)  I want you to consider what your own biases are and your own cultural beliefs (including medical/healthcare culture) are about “good” care, health, etc. For your reflection, I want you to consider what beliefs and biases you think you may bump up against, or already are, in your book. This is also includes positioning yourself in relationship to the stories, people, or scenarios in your book, much like our social mapping exercise in class. Where are you positioned and how does that look differently or similarly to the scenarios and stories you are being introduced to in your book.

My culture is African American migrated from east african during my teens.

The social mapping exercise in class I ended up 1 step backwards, disadvantaged compared to my peers who landed 6 to 7 steps ahead due to color, status, family wealth ect…

I have attached Implicit bias and cultural humility down below. Please make it short and sweet. No AI. And use the book mostly please just chart 1 to 4.

Implicit Bias

First, let’s define it.  “Implicit bias, also known as implicit prejudice or implicit attitude, is a negative attitude, of which one is not consciously aware, against a specific social group.

Implicit bias is thought to be shaped by experience and based on learned associations between particular qualities and social categories, including race and/or gender. Individuals’ perceptions and behaviors can be influenced by the implicit biases they hold, even if they are unaware they hold such biases. Implicit bias is an aspect of implicit social cognition: the phenomenon that perceptions, attitudes, and stereotypes can operate prior to conscious intention or endorsement.” (APA, Nov 2022)

Next, let’s think about our own.  Implicit Bias can be assumptions, ideas, or prejudices that we hold and influence our attunement and treatment of others that we have inherited in our upbringing, been exposed to in our education and media, and have reinforced in our experiences or groups.  Many or all of them are learned or absorbed, and are unconscious. Thus the first step is recognizing they exist at all, then that they exist for and in us, and that we have all likely acted upon these biases in ways that may have caused harm to another.  No one is exempt from that.

Cultural Humility

First, let’s define it. “Cultural humility involves an ongoing process of self-exploration and self-critique combined with a willingness to learn from others. It means entering a relationship with another person with the intention of honoring their beliefs, customs, and values. It means acknowledging differences and accepting that person for who they are.” (Soundscaping Source, 2021)

“Cultural Humility Is:

A personal lifelong commitment to self-evaluation and self-critique whereby the individual not only learns about another’s culture, but one starts with an examination of her/his own beliefs and cultural identities

Recognition of power dynamics and imbalances, a desire to fix those power imbalances and to develop partnerships with people and groups who advocate for others

Institutional accountability”

(Yeager, Katherine A., and Susan Bauer-Wu. 2013. “Cultural Humility: Essential Foundation For Clinical Researchers”Links to an external site.. Applied Nursing Research 26 (4): 251-256)

Next, let’s think about our own.  What are the cultures that we are made of? This includes family culture, culture of origin, being of dominant culture vs marginalized culture, and healthcare/medical culture.  What are your intersections and reinforcements?  Meaning, where does your cultural identity receive validation from the culture you are in and where does it experience a demotion? This is similar to our social mapping exercise in our first class; how does your culture bring you closer to or further away from the locus of power?
