Discussion Prompt: Evaluating Online Sources
In this session, you will be giving an informative speech in which you are required to use supporting evidence. It is the responsibility of the speaker to make sure the sources are accurate and reliable before using them in the speech. This discussion will help you evaluate whether the sources you find are accurate and reliable enough to use in your speech.
First, select one online source you are using in your informative speech. Post the link to it and respond to the following questions:
• Is this source credible? Using what you learned from Chapter 9, does it meet the criteria for a good source? Why or why not.
• What types of supporting material are used in this source (e.g., statistics, examples/stories, expert testimonies, visuals)? What is the strongest piece of supporting material? What makes this piece of evidence effective?
• How will you introduce the source in the speech?
Note: Introducing sources in presentations differ from how we cite information in a paper. In the presentation you introduce the source before you present the information, providing enough information so your audience can find the source easily if they desire to do so. Generally, this includes the author(s) name, brief acknowledgement of the author’s credibility, title of work/publication and publication date.
• Reflecting on and assessing the quality of the sources you are using in your informative speech, what are one or two steps you can take to strengthen the supporting material in your presentation?
• From a biblical perspective, why is it important to consider the quality of the sources we use in presentations?
