Discussion Module 3
This discussion board post will take the form of a debate about the meaning and role of equality and diversity in workplace policies. For this debate, you will need to read the assigned readings and do some additional searches online. What you will debate is the following: what role should diversity play in a company’s policies regarding hiring, promotion, and termination? The rules are as follows:Team assignments:• If your last name begins with letters A – M, you are on “team for equality of opportunity only” THIS IS MINE. LAST NAME WITH A “B”• If your last name begins with letters N – Z, you are on “team for equality of opportunity and equality of outcome”
Points of agreement between the teams1. Both teams agree that discrimination based on race/ethnicity, sex, nationality, etc. is wrong and that policies need to be put in place to prevent discrimination as well as to address it wherever it arises.2. Both teams agree on equality of opportunity, i.e. that people from diverse ethnic/racial backgrounds, nationalities, and both sexes (male/female) should have equality of opportunity. So, it’s not that one team believes that there should be equal opportunity but the other team does not. Rather, both teams agree on equality of opportunity.
Points of disagreement between the teams:3. Where the team disagree is whether there should also be equality of outcome. The first team needs to argue against equality of outcome, whereas the second team needs to argue for equality of outcome. This is the debate topic.
Please look up articles, lectures, or any other resource online that can help you formulate your arguments. If you cite anything or use anyone else’s materials, please ensure that you provide in text reference. After you write your response (min. 200-300 words), then respond to an argument from someone on the other team (min. 50 words).
Disclaimer: In real-world cases, the terms are usually not this stark between these two positions. There are a lot of ‘graded’ positions between the two. But for the purposes of this ethical exercise, the class is debating two rigid and mutually opposed positions as an informative pedagogical exercise. Put on your boxing gloves yet again; it’s Round 3, and it’s time to rumble!
