ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS:

As part of school leadership, a top priority is seeing that every student is given the same opportunities to succeed. Doing so requires recognizing inequities inherent in every classroom, where each student is working with different amounts of privilege afforded to them from their family situations and backgrounds. In this assessment, reflect on what educational equity means to you and demonstrate your ability to strategize to create more equitable schools and classrooms.

Watch “Educational Equity,” which is located in the Learning Activities folder and offers more context for this idea from the educator’s perspective.

Research definitions of educational equity. Determine a definition of educational equity, including what this term means to the field of education.

Create a visual, such as a chart or infographic, showing your definition. You can include a picture, a link to a video, and so on to help further define the meaning of educational equity.

Write a 350-word paper to accompany your visual that addresses the following questions:

  • How does your definition of educational equity promote equal access to a free and public education for a diverse group of students?
  • What is the importance of educating for democracy and equity?
  • How might you ensure equitable access to digital tools and resources for the students in your school?
  • What are your personal beliefs and values about diversity and equity?

Cite any references to support your assignment.

Format your citations according to APA guidelines.

Educational Equity

Educators today stand on the frontlines of a future that is as exciting and full of promise as it can seem uncertain and challenging.

Our students are eager and ready for whatever they can gain from their education, and it’s our responsibility to offer each one of them the same opportunities as their peers.

Particularly as administrators and leaders, we have the ability and influence to take a close look at our schools to discover where we can champion fairness, equalize access to resources, promote respect, and bring awareness to the ideals that can make the most difference with students who are perhaps the least privileged and the most marginalized.

Where do you see yourself in this future? In what ways can your role impact your students’ experiences in school? Study the societal changes, issues, and research-backed responses by school administrators who have raised the bar on equity, cultural competence, and differentiated teaching in their schools.

Finally, think about your institution and where it can do better on issues that are crucial and pressing for the progress and well-being of students as well as your fellow educators.
