Setting client expectations, identifying client responsibility, and clarifying your role as a social worker are important skills to ensure ethical engagement and adherence to the values of the social work profession. These skills are also necessary in building rapport and setting boundaries as a foundation for addressing complicated issues. Make sure you can apply these skills effectively to prepare for your role plays in this course.

For your post to this discussion, keeping in mind the concepts from the previous week, you will upload a video submission of initiating service to a client using the Initiating Services [PDF] document as a guiding tool. Additional things to consider: 

  • Introduction (who are you and why are you there to meet the client).
  • Informed consent.
  • Limitations (Duty to Warn, limits of confidentiality, etc.).
  • Confidentiality statement.
  • Policies and ethics.
  • Describing the initial purpose.
