Question 1: From the Ogbechie article, it can be determined that the screening processes for patients can be often confusing.  While this is a published article by the National Institute of Health, there is little information that is helpful for the healthcare provider.  Using some of the principles from Tables on pages 310-311, what are some suggestions that the authors could have used to present a better case for the study?

Question 2: In the United States, the United States Preventive Task Force is given the responsibility to evaluate the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness analysis of prevention services; other countries do not have the benefit of our agency.  Discuss your ideas of how the authors from the Mbewe article explore the use of American screening tools on their population.

a. Does the screening tool that was developed and used by the authors help with assessing the effectiveness of the screening?

b. Is there a measurable outcome from this study?

  • Question 3: There have been several incidences in public health when studies have been published that have contradicted best health practices.  Gordis gives the example of hormone replacement therapy from the WHI study.  Discuss other examples and post the reference when contradictory information has been given to the public.
    • What are the consequences when good studies give different information?
    • Are there ethical consequences that exist?
