Instructions

Quality Nursing Home is using the qualitative approach to update its risk management program. They are located in an area that is often hit by hurricanes. They are near a river that overflows its banks every year. A floodwall would protect the Nursing Home from the river but the city has not built one due to the expense. The only protection it has received is from residents in the city who build a sandbag wall when there is a threat. In the past when the nursing home has been flooded it did not flood above three inches on the first floor (There is no basement).

The following are located on the first floor: lobby, business office, gift shop, cafeteria, registration, administrative offices, and physical and speech therapy. The Risk Management team has made the risk determination related to external flooding. They have decided that risk of flood damage to the first floor is extremely likely. Because of this most of the supplies, equipment and patient information have been elevated off the floor. The Risk Management team has decided that the severity of the flood damage to the first floor would be moderate.

  1. Quality Nursing Home is at the risk determination step. How many steps of a risk analysis has it already completed (list each step completed)?
  2. Two factors are considered for each threat using the qualitative approach. What are the two factors?
  3. For each threat that is identified, the two factors that you identified in Question 2 are rated. What are the levels of ratings called AND what value would you assign to each rating based on the analysis that the Risk Management Team has done (there are two parts to this question)
  4. Combining the two scores that you have assigned under the qualitative approach in question 3, assign a value to the flooding risk at Quality Nursing Home.
  5. What do you believe are the positive and negative aspects of the qualitative approach to risk determination? Why?
