7095.10.1 : Evaluates Environmental Risk Prevention

The learner evaluates the impact human activities have on their environment.

Introduction

Environmental health is wide-reaching, with a considerable list of key topics. Environmental health professionals are tasked with critical missions all over the world, serving as agents of positive change.

For this task, you will identify, describe, and analyze environmental risks present in a selected country outside of the United States. You will create a risk-prevention report that demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of environmental health concerns in the chosen country. By selecting and examining specified environmental health concerns presented in this assessment, you will contribute to the development of informed strategies and policies aimed at improving public health.

Note: All references used should be current, within the last five years.

ScenarioYou were hired by the World Health Organization (WHO) as an environmental health consultant to identify and analyze global environmental health concerns in a country outside of the United States. Your findings will contribute valuable insights to global efforts in promoting healthier living conditions. The WHO requests that you examine two environmental health concerns. Once you have chosen and analyzed the two environmental health concerns, you are to present the WHO with a report of your findings.Requirements

7095.10.2 : Explains the Role of Government in Environmental Protection

The learner explains the role of government in the environmental protection of various dimensions of environmental problems.

Introduction

Public health professionals should have fundamental knowledge of the intricate relationship between individuals and their environment. Through this assessment you will showcase your proficiency, comprehension, and broad knowledge regarding the critical choices made in risk management and the subsequent impact on the health and well-being of individuals, communities, and vulnerable populations.

For this task, you will explain the role of government in the environmental protection related to various dimensions of environmental problems. You will examine how a community can decrease environmental risks and promote health. As you navigate through this assessment, consider the interdisciplinary nature of environmental health and how it intersects with governmental policies, community engagement, and individual behaviors.

Note: All references used should be current, within the last five years.

ScenarioPesticides are widely used across the country, and some have been shown to have an impact on human health. Governments at the federal, state, and local levels have proposed laws and regulations to protect public health and the environment, including health risks associated with pesticides.

The goal of the governor’s office is to safeguard the health and well-being of the state’s residents and prioritize public health and environmental protection. The governor of your state has received numerous requests from concerned residents regarding the need to ban toxic chemicals in pesticides, specifically glyphosate, a common herbicide. Glyphosate has been identified as a carcinogen by the World Health Organization.

As a lead staff member in the governor’s policy unit, your task is to draft a short paper for review by the policy unit. With this info, the staff will be able to draft an official proposal of a new public health policy that addresses constituents’ concerns. You are asked to provide within the paper the necessary steps to identify the health impacts of glyphosate, explore safer alternatives, and examine relevant environmental laws and regulations.Requirements

7095.10.3 : Examines Community and Environmental Health

The learner examines how a community can decrease environmental risks and promote health.

For this task, you will examine how a community can decrease environmental risks and promote health. You will need to develop a comprehensive community risk assessment (CRA) guide tailored to the specific environmental challenges faced by the town of Greenfield, Michigan. The guide should facilitate a collaborative effort between environmental professionals and agencies, aiming to analyze the interactions between human behavior, environmental health, and vulnerable populations. Furthermore, the guide should propose effective strategies to decrease environmental risks and promote health within the community. The demographic data for Greenfield, Michigan has been included.

Note: All references used should be current, within the last five years.

Scenario

Greenfield, Michigan is a small industrial town near Detroit. Just outside of town is a neighborhood built near an old industrial landfill that was closed twenty years ago. The residents of the neighborhood are mostly low-income families and older adults who retired from industry jobs. When the landfill was open, industries disposed of chemical wastes such as xylene and polychlorinated biphenyls at the site. While the landfill was safely capped when it was closed, a recent earthquake damaged the town’s infrastructure, such as roads, sewer pipes, power lines, and the landfill’s waste management system.

In the past month after the earthquake, many residents of the neighborhood have complained of a chemical smell and severe unexplained health issues such as cough; headaches; nausea; difficulty breathing; and irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat. Emergency room visits have increased, as well, which alerted local health officials of a potential problem. Because of the extent of the concern, the local health officer requested assistance from the Michigan Department of Health.

The commissioner from Michigan Department of Health has activated a call-to-action, assembling a team of environmental and health professionals and agencies to perform a community risk assessment (CRA) at the neighborhood. You were hired by the commissioner as an environmental epidemiologist to spearhead the CRA project and provide the report to the commissioner. Your task is to develop a CRA guide.

Note: All references used should be current, within the last five years.

A.  Use the scenario to develop a community risk assessment (CRA) guide that addresses the following key components:

1.  Discuss the interactions between human behavior, environmental health, and vulnerable populations in Greenfield, including specific examples and evidence-based connections.

2.  Discuss two acute (individual) health effects from exposure to both xylene and polychlorinated biphenyls on the Greenfield population.

3.  Discuss the impact that the toxic chemicals from the scenario have on the environmental health of the community, including long-term implications for the community.

4.  Discuss what two actions the local or state government should take to remedy the health risk, including evidence or specific examples.

5.  Discuss two stakeholders involved in restoring the health of the community including the following:

•  stakeholder interest

•  stakeholder motivation

•  stakeholder contributions

6.  Discuss two vulnerabilities using the Greenfield demographic data of the population that may inform risk assessment and mitigation strategies.

7.  Discuss two strategies using relevant data and statistics from the last five years.

B.  Acknowledge sources, using in-text citations and references, for content that is quoted, paraphrased, or summarized.

C.  Demonstrate professional communication in the content and presentation of your submission.
