the book names in Reyita you can find it online or  I can send the chapter of the book too.

  1. Trace the steps of Reyita’s grandmother (Tatica/ Antonina). Retrace her journey from home to the Caribbean.
  2. What are some characteristics of the lives of enslaved Black Cubans in Cuba. Focus on what you have read.
  3. On p. 32, p.41. p. 57-58, look for examples of internal colonization. When you find an example, state what is the colonizing principle that is internalized.
  4. In Reyita, who tells the story? And who writes the story? So, what makes this text a “testimonio”?
  5. Based on what you learned about a testimonio in the lecture, what makes a testimonio *different* from a biography or an autobiography?
  6. What could be Reyita’s political purpose? What issues might she want to raise in our consciousness?
  7. Find examples of each characteristic below, in Chapter 1.

In your discussion board post, answer all of the questions above

Be sure to reference the reading AT LEAST THREE TIMES (include page numbers; or explain the examples in detail), so that we  all know what you are referring to in the book.

You may answer some questions more at length than others.

Include a minimum of 200 words in your post.

Try to refrain from making references to your personal life, generic or judgemental comments about the characters in the book –  instead, try to keep the comments focused on thinking critically about the text.

At the end of your post – ask a question to classmates.

In your discussion question to the class and in your answer to your classmates’ questions:

  1. focus on the reading–the goal is to get the class to interpret what we all read, read between the lines, ask each other how you understood xyz or what xyz symbolizes or how it relates to one of the class topics.
  2. Hypothetical questions and generic questions will not count as discussion questions. For example, do not ask: What would happen if…? Why do you think this person decided to do…..? What do you think about what this person did….?
  3. Take your time to write a thoughtful and relevant question. You can refer to a specific page in the chapter, and a specific concept from the lecture. For example, you can ask: On page …. what does Reyita reveal about….? On page …. what did you learn about…. in the Caribbean? When this person said/did …. is it an example of the impact of colonialism? Is ….. an example of …. in the reading about the Caribbean?
  4. Stay focused on the content (the information revealed) or the form (how the story is told).
  5. Steer clear of comments about how the story makes you feel; or your personal judgement of the characters; or generic comments about the Caribbean.
  6. Be specific – refer to a particular part of the reading.
