Week 1 Discussion 2: Engaging in ADEI Practice From an Anti-Oppressive Practice Approach

Social workers understand how racism and oppression shape human experiences and how these two constructs influence practice at the individual, family, group, organizational, and community levels and in policy and research. Social workers understand the pervasive impact of White supremacy and privilege and use their knowledge, awareness, and skills to engage in anti-racist practice. Social workers understand how diversity and intersectionality shape human experiences and identity development and affect equity and inclusion.

In developing your skills as a social worker, you will have the opportunity to use various theories, perspectives, approaches, and frameworks for interacting with clients who have been marginalized and oppressed. It is essential to continue personal reflection and ongoing training as social workers to ensure we are practicing in the most ethical and equitable way with our clients.

For this discussion, you will take stock of how diverse your world is in hopes to see how you may be able to improve your exposure to multiculturalism. Please review this week’s reading material related to ADEI and Anti-Oppressive Practice. Then, create a diversity profile that is outlined below and upload it with a discussion considering the following domains and various environments in your life.

Domains:

Examples include gender, race, ethnicity, sexuality, ability, religion, veteran status, and so forth.

Your environment:

  • Family.
  • Co-workers/supervisor.
  • Elementary/middle/high school/college.
  • Teachers/friends in school.
  • Close friends.
  • Dentist/doctor.
  • Other important people in your life.
  • People who regularly visit your home.
  • Your neighbors.
  • Places you frequent.

Discussion prompts:

  • After creating this profile, how diverse is your world?
  • What areas do you feel may need to be expanded?
  • Considering your diverse world, reviewing the reading material for this week, and your overview of the course, describe your understanding of ADEI and anti-oppressive practice in social work.
    • Consider how you might engage, assess, and plan with clients who have been marginalized and oppressed. Use the reading material to inform your discussion.
