Week 2 Discussion Thread: Problem Statements and Research Questions
Problem Statement Error Identification and Remedy
The current problem statement possesses several errors as shown below:
- The first sentence is not in the correct format as specified in Moore’s (2022) paper. It encompasses the phrase “to be surveyed” versus “to be addressed” followed by vague content that does not appear grounded contextually, so that the reader knows which industry the problem exists in. According to Moore (2022), the first sentence of the problem statement should be clear, descriptive, and self-explanatory. To address these errors, utilize the formula provided by Moore (2022) and ensure the statement after “resulting in” clearly defines the negative consequences of the problem being addressed.
- The supporting three sentences after the first sentence are inconsistent and do not fully support the assertions made in the problem statement (Moore, 2022). The competitiveness of bank rates does not pertain to the problem at hand. In addition, the 2015 resource is outside of the five (5) year guidance for sources to support the problem (Moore, 2022). Lastly, the reference to benefits and the Healthcare industry are outside of the scope of the problem. To address these errors, it is appropriate to develop active voice declarative statements where the subject performs the action from sources that support the problems bank leaders at the Austin, TX location is facing (Moore, 2022).
- The bridge sentence (Moore, 2022) introduces a new industry, Information Technology (IT), thus causing incongruence within the problem statement and no clear journey or connection to the specific problem. To address this error, it is recommended to maintain the same scope throughout the problem statement to keep the researcher aligned during the study.
- The closing sentence is not narrowly focused from the general problem statement and does not begin with the same words as the first sentence (Moore, 2022). Furthermore, it continues the conversation from the bridge sentence regarding the IT industry and introduces a new location that has not previously been discussed in the prior sentences. To address this error, the researcher should use the Moore (2022) template for writing a specific problem statement to ensure a narrowly focused subset of the general problem has been identified, allowing the researcher to have a keen focus for the remainder of the study.
Corrected Problem Statement
The general problem to be addressed is that bank leaders lack the knowledge to effectively handle high job demands on employees, resulting in low morale, reduced productivity, increased voluntary turnover, and decreased customer satisfaction. Kenyi & John (2020) found that providing job resources to employees in the banking industry significantly increased employee engagement, while high job demands and organizational uncertainty reduced morale and productivity. According to Lin et al. (2024), studies have shown that high employee job stress has an adverse impact on overall employee engagement and job happiness, leading to the intention to leave, followed by high voluntary termination rates within the banking industry. Kim & Yeo (2024) found that high anxiety and job stress lead to employees failing to provide high-quality customer service in the banking industry, resulting in decreased customer satisfaction. Recent studies indicate that leaders’ inability to work with teams to manage workload in a way that mitigates stress, enhances morale, and retains employees is a significant concern within banking institutions. The specific problem to be addressed is that potentially, bank leaders at an Austin, TX location lack the knowledge and skill set to strategically manage job demands on employees within the banking industry, possibly resulting in high employee stress, low productivity and morale, increased voluntary termination, and decreased customer satisfaction.
Research Questions
How do bank leaders in Austin, TX develop the skill set to effectively assess, manage, and reduce job demands so that employee performance and customer satisfaction is maintained?
- What strategies do bank leaders deploy to improve employee engagement in a way that mitigates employee turnover?
- What strategies do bank leaders use to help employees manage stress so that customers are not negatively impacted and high-quality service is still achieved?
