2-1 The Financial Impact of Competition
You are currently working at a large academic medical center in an urban community. For the last several weeks, you have heard that other health care organizations are looking to build within a 10-mile radius of your organization. Your CEO has asked you to research the other organizations and how their services are similar to and different from what you currently offer.
Discuss the following questions:
- What are some business and financial implications of the differences between community not-for-profit hospitals and large academic medical centers that may affect staffing, programs offered, and policies and procedures?
- What financial impacts could result if a for-profit organization was built within your community?
What are some of the financial benefits of being an academic facility rather than a not-for-profit facility?
- Students will answer the following questions.

GENERAL GUIDELINES AND EXPECTATIONS FOR DISCUSSION RESPONSES
- Students will submit “detailed, robust” graduate-level responses to the forum questions. Most of the information must be in the student’s own words; 20% or fewer quotes are acceptable per academic standards.
- A two- or three-sentence response to a question is not sufficient and is not that of a graduate student. One to two paragraphs mean you meet the requirements accomplished. To earn Proficient, the responses must be more than adequate.
- Students will include the “actual” questions above the responses.
- Students WILL NOT list their responses.
- Students will also include, apply, and cite what they learned from the assigned readings (textbook) in proper APA format, according to the 7th edition, in addition to a current journal article (no more than five years old). This is not an option but a requirement. In other words, students should use at least two sources to answer the questions; the textbook and a current journal article.
- APA: If you are not familiar with APA, I encourage you to take some time and review your APA manual.” Although this is a small percentage of your grade, students are graded on content, critical thinking, and formatting. If you are not properly citing your references, I am required to bring this to your attention. For example, only the first word, proper nouns, and words after a colon are capitalized when citing a title, as demonstrated in the APA manual.
- When responding to your peers, please include an open-ended follow-up question at the end of the response to enhance the discussion. Open-ended questions are questions that require more than a yes or no response.Discussion RubricCriteriaExceeds Expectations (100%)Meets Expectations (88%)Partially Meets Expectations (80%)Does Not Meet Expectations (0%)ValueContentDemonstrates a thorough understanding of content and purpose that is responsive to the assigned task(s) and focuses all elements of the initial and subsequent discussion posts.Demonstrates adequate consideration of content and purpose.
